Kids Snowboard Bindings FAQs

Buying board bindings for kids can be confusing, because there are a lot of different options and features to choose from.

It's hard to know which kids snowboard bindings are the right fit for your child, and it's easy to make a mistake that could lead to an uncomfortable ride or even an injury.

We have researched and compiled a list of common FAQs for kids snowboard bindings to help you make the best decision for your child. Our binding guide includes information on sizing, types of bindings, features, and more.

What size bindings for kids snowboard?

Most bindings have a size range that they are meant to fit. When choosing a binding for a child, it is important to make sure that the binding matches the size of their snowboard.

Otherwise, it will be difficult for them to control their board and they may not be able to stay on it. Most binding manufacturer's and online shops have sizing charts and guides to make sure you choose the correct binding size.

Can any bindings go on any snowboard?

Almost. Bindings attach to a snowboard using a system of screws and plates that clamp onto the board. So as long as your bindings have the compatible screw pattern and your board has the appropriate mounting holes, then they will fit.

It's important to check the mounting compatibility of the snowboard and bindings to make sure the bindings you buy are suitable for the snowboard's mounting pattern.

Do bindings go by shoe size?

It depends on the binding. Some bindings are based on shoe size, but others are not.

Bindings that are not based on shoe size tend to be more adjustable, which makes them a better fit for a wider range of shoes sizes. However, they can also be more difficult to use.

Bindings that are based on shoe size tend to be easier to use, because they fit a narrower range of shoe sizes. However, they may not be as adjustable as other bindings.

How do you choose snowboard bindings for beginners?

When choosing bindings for beginners, it is important to find a model that is comfortable and easy to use. Some features that you may want to look for include adjustable straps and bindings, as well as a ratchet system that makes it easy to tighten the bindings.

How do I know what bindings I need for my snowboard?

There are a few things to consider when purchasing bindings for your child's snowboard, like board size, boot size and mounting pattern.

If your child is a beginner, you will want bindings that are adjustable and easy to use. You don't want something that is going to be too complicated or difficult to get onto your board. If your child is an intermediate or advanced rider, they will want bindings that are more aggressive and offer more support.

Do snowboard bindings really matter?

There are a lot of different opinions on this topic, but in general, bindings do matter. They provide the connection between your boots and the board, so it's important to have a good fit. Otherwise, you may not be able to control your board properly and could end up injuring yourself.

There are a lot of different types and brands of bindings available, so it's important to do your research before buying a pair, as you're doing now reading this article!

What are the two types of snowboard bindings?

There are two types of board bindings: strap-ins and step-ins.

Strap-in bindings consist of a baseplate, a ratchet system, and two straps that go over the rider's boots. The ratchet system tightens the straps to hold the rider's boots in place. Strap-in bindings can also be broken down into 2 categories: conventional strap or rear entry.

Step-in bindings consist of a frame, a retention system (a spring-loaded lever), and two plastic pins that fit into corresponding slots on the frame. When the retention system is released, the pins can be pushed down into the frame to lock them in place. To release the binding, the rider simply pulls up on the retention system to release the pins. (NOTE: at the time this article was published, Burton was the only brand to offer step-in bindings for older kids)

Should my boots hang over my bindings?

Snowboard boots should not excessively hang over the bindings, because they'll get in the way when you're trying to make turns.

Are snowboard bindings one size fits all?

No, there is no such thing as a one size fits all snowboard binding. Bindings are sized according to the boot size, so it's important to know what size boots your child wears before buying bindings.

Are stiff or soft bindings better?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on personal preference, experience level and the type of boarding your child will be doing.

Stiff bindings offer more control and are better for more aggressive riders, while soft bindings are more forgiving and ideal for beginner or intermediate skiers.

Wrap-Up

You don’t want to skimp on your child’s bindings because a good pair of bindings is an important part of a snowboard setup. Good bindings enable riders to have more control over the board, provide the best in comfort, and help absorb vibrations from harsh terrain and high speed.

Even if you’re on a budget, it’s important to buy good bindings for your child that will last and ensure they enjoy their season(s) on the slopes and always want to go back for more.

Thanks for reading and happy riding!
