It’s that time of year again – the snow is starting to fall and the slopes are getting ready to open! If you’re like us, you can barely contain your excitement for the upcoming season. And what better way to get pumped up than by watching some awesome snowboard movies?

From big-name riders like Travis Rice and Gigi Rüf to up-and-comers on the scene, there’s something for everyone on this list of snowboard movies. To our surprise, the majority of the movies listed here can be watched for free on You Tube, which is great! The more recent films have much higher definition, but the even though the older films on this list were are not as good quality, they are certainly iconic and definitely worth watching.

We asked the snowboarding community on social media to name their favorite snowboard movie. Lots of fellow snowboarders responded and we thought it would be a good idea to include this list on our blog, so that other snowboarders (or fans) can check out these great films.

The Art of Flight

Description

Two years in the making, Red Bull Media House's "The Art of FLIGHT" gives iconic snowboarder Travis Rice and friends the opportunity to redefine what is possible in the mountains. The film covers Rice and friends as they try to land new tricks and explore new zones, intercut with avalanches, accidents, and other issues they face along the way. Brain Farm and their arsenal of filmmaking technology capture the culture, wildlife and scenic landscapes the riders take in along the way. The result is a cinematic experience that completely rewrite the formula for action sports cinema.

Out Cold

Description

Although it may not look like it at first, Out Cold is actually a pretty clever homage to classic film noir Casablanca. The movie is set on a small Alaskan ski slope called Bull Mountain, which is slated to be turned into a posh resort by a ruthless developer. However, the main character Rick falls in love with the developer's daughter Anna, complicating his plans to take over the mountain. Throughout the film, there are several scenes that are "borrowed" from Casablanca, as well as plenty of hijinks courtesy of Rick's slacker friends and some impressive snowboarding sequences. Even if you're not a fan of old movies, Out Cold is definitely worth checking out for its humor and action.

Teal

Description

Chris Corning has had an accomplished career as a slopestyle and big air snowboarder, and he decided to try his hand at backcountry and street filming with his first feature film, Teal. The 33-minute movie was produced by Corning and starred him as well. During the film, he showed off his skills in the backcountry and on the streets while offering viewers a glimpse into his life. The movie was well-received by audiences and helped to solidify Corning's reputation as a talented filmmaker as well as a snowboarder.

The film also features local U.S. Pro Halfpipe Team rider Chase Blackwell and pro snowboarders Sam Klein, Sam Anderson, Windham Miller, Brett Moody, Conor Carroll, Colton Carroll, Josh Oakes, TJ Homan, Jack Harris and Ian Sullivan. The film’s principal cinematography and post production is by Alex Havey.

Wildcats-Nine Lives

The Wildcats "Nine Lives" snowboarding movie is a great way to see the lifestyles of the 14 members and their tremendous abilities. The Fourth Phase

Big jumps are sick! There's no denying that. But every year, someone comes along and upping the ante by doing an even bigger jump or adding an extra 180 to their rotation. So what aspects of snowboarding can withstand the test of time? This film examines this question and some answers were found that will have you waxing your board and watching the Weather Channel in September. You will see! It'll be a good film to watch.

It’s Always Snowing Somewhere

Description

Over the course of the 2007-2008 snowboard seasons, Burton's filmmakers and photographers embarked on a project that provided a unique and imaginative look inside the lives of the world's most influential riders. This multi-media project explored the elite men's Burton Global Team and a handful of top up-and-comers, delving into their lifestyles and personalities. The project followed the riders as they travelled around the globe, competed in events and explored new terrain. In addition to traditional film and photography, the project made use of cutting-edge technology, including Go-Pro cameras and drones. The finished product gave viewers an insider's look at the lives of these athletes, and provided a rare glimpse into their world.

Dear Rider

Description

Burton's enthusiastic commitment to the sport of snowboarding was contagious, and helped fuel its explosive growth in the 1980s and '90s. The Vermont native was a true innovator, constantly pushing the boundaries of what was possible on a snowboard. He was also a tireless advocate for the sport, working tirelessly to gain acceptance for snowboarding at resorts around the world. Dear Rider pays tribute to Burton's legacy, through interviews with some of the biggest names in the sport, as well as never-before-seen footage of Burton himself. The film is a fitting tribute to a true pioneer, and an essential watch for any fan of snowboarding.
